There are two major components that you must consider when attempting to reduce error in measurement equipment. First, environmental stability. Environmental stability is one of the largest contributors to error in measurement equipment. This is due to the expansion and contraction of the different types of materials that compose measurement equipment. Through the implementation of environmental controls, BTS has been able to control the expansion and contraction of our lab equipment. Our laboratory is constructed in such a way that it is independent from the rest of the building; all doors leading into the measurement area are protected with password entry doors. The heating and cooling system is independent from the rest of the building, and is dedicated to supporting only the needs of the laboratory measurement area. Temperature and humidity are monitored and recorded in nine different places twenty-four hours a day. All this has been done to create a stable, long term environment that holds 68º +/- 1º F (20º +/-0.56º C).
Second, is electrical power. Fluctuations in current and voltage can have dramatic effects on measurement equipment. Most companies do not understand the implications of voltage spikes, brown-outs, or even just standard variations in supplied power to their facility. During the construction of the laboratory at BTS, the issue of power supply was addressed by using some of the latest equipment available today to monitor, clean and stabilize the power being provided to the measurement equipment.
